How are edible insects farmed ?

To give you delicious food products made out of edible insects at each bite, everything starts with high-quality ingredients. At JIMINI’S, we take great care of how our edible insects are farmed.

The importance of a high-quality edible insects farm

Our 4 species of insects are all bred in specialized farms in Europe; in the Netherlands to be more precise.
Our crickets, grasshoppers, buffalo worms and mealworms come from facilities controlling the whole chain of insect breeding for more than 20 years.

Just as any other serious company working in the agri-food industry, we can guarantee the traceability of each batch of insects thanks to a great control all along the chain.

Thanks to this experience and expertise, we can make you benefit from edible insects having constant taste and nutritional quality.

Feed insects with healthy ingredients

We all know well the phrase: « We are what we eat »; but we can even get further: « We are what we eat has eaten. »

That’s why our insects are fed only with healthy products that they eat normally. The feed is only composed of plant based products without GMO nor pesticides.

Les vers de farine et vers buffalo sont nourris de son de blé agrémenté d’épluchures de carottes et autres légumes.

Grasshoppers and crickets are fed with grains, fresh vegetables and wheat sprouts.

Insects welfare; an idea that can make you smile but that need to be taken into account

The question of insects welfare is something we take into account. Insects welfare, just as plant suffering that is often not taken seriously but 15 years ago few people believe that fish could actually feel pain. So, let’s be cautious!

For allowing this, our breeders respect the 5 fundamental needs for essential animal welfare enounced by Roger Brambell in 1965 :

  1. Freedom from pain, injury or disease.
  2. Freedom from hunger or thirst.
  3. Freedom to express normal behaviour by providing sufficient space.
  4. Freedom from fear and distress
  5. Freedom from discomfort by providing an appropriate environment.

In order to limit any potential harm, our insects are killed by freezing. As they are cold-blooded, they are dependant on the external temperature. The cold slow step by step their metabolism.

They are then freeze-dried so they keep their nutritional and taste qualities. This also makes the product more stable and ease the logistic process.

Once the insects arrive at Melun, they are prepared in our workshop where we make different kind of food products out of them : crispy insects as snacks, protein bars with cricket powder, granolas with buffalo worms powder.

Farming and cooking edible insects is a serious job that requires a lot of expertise!
